YouTube Monetization

YouTube monetization is the set of ways a channel earns: ad revenue through the Partner Programme, plus sponsorships, affiliate links and whatever you sell yourself.

In plain English

Ad revenue is the one people know about, and it is rarely the largest. A channel with an engaged audience usually earns more from sponsorships and from things it recommends or sells.

The Partner Programme has a threshold of subscribers and watch hours before ads can be switched on at all, so the other routes tend to arrive first.

Why it matters

Understanding the mix stops you optimising for the wrong number. Chasing views for ad revenue and building a business off the channel are different strategies.

It also keeps the work honest. Income spread across several sources means no single sponsor decides what you are allowed to say.

How it works

  1. The channel qualifiesSubscribers and watch hours over YouTube’s threshold, with the policies met.
  2. Ads run against the videosRevenue shared, varying enormously by subject and by country.
  3. Sponsors pay for a segmentPriced on the audience, not just the view count.
  4. Links carry the restAffiliate links, your own products and your site in the description.

Send viewers somewhere you own

A video earns once. A viewer who joins your email list from the description can be reached again next month, whatever the algorithm does.
